Medical XR Workshop

XR Workshop & VR Project

2023

As part of ShiftMedical 2023—the leading European conference for XR in healthcare—I co-led the XR Innovation Workshop, a five-session program focused on pushing the boundaries of XR application in medical training.
The workshop brought together experts from across the XR development spectrum, including designers, developers, and medical professionals, to collaboratively explore immersive solutions for clinical education.
Held over three days in Heidelberg, the workshop became a central feature of the event, offering hands-on collaboration and knowledge exchange alongside keynote talks and demos.
At the heart of the program was our VR Emergency Room Training Simulation, a showcase project developed during the workshop to demonstrate real-world XR applications in healthcare.
The experience simulated an ER scenario where medical professionals could practice identifying a lung fracture—highlighting the potential of VR for skill development and critical decision-making in high-pressure environments.

Role & Tasks

  • Structured and organized the full workshop program.

  • Coordinated cross-disciplinary collaboration among XR and medical experts.

  • Led development planning for the VR training simulation.

  • Oversaw production milestones and managed the technical team.

  • Provided live technical support throughout the event.

  • Represented the workshop as part of the ShiftMedical core experience.

The XR Innovation Workshop was designed as an open, collaborative space within the ShiftMedical 2023 fair to explore how XR can transform healthcare training. Over five sessions, participants worked in small interdisciplinary groups, shared knowledge, and contributed to the creation of a VR Emergency Room Training Simulation—a prototype that allowed users to practice diagnosing a lung fracture in a virtual clinical setting.

I was responsible for curating the workshop structure, selecting key session topics, and ensuring a productive, inspiring environment for all participants. The sessions ranged from ideation and design thinking to technical implementation and real-time testing with support from XR leaders and healthcare professionals. HTC VIVE provided hardware support, further anchoring the project in real-world capabilities.

As the technical lead, I managed the development process of the VR simulation—from concept to demo-ready prototype. Built with a strong focus on realism and usability, the experience immersed users in a high-fidelity emergency room environment, where they were guided through the assessment of a trauma patient. This highlighted the advantages of XR training tools: repeatability, safe failure, and consistent feedback loops.

The workshop was a resounding success and became a highlight of ShiftMedical 2023. It was recognized by attendees and organizers as a model for what future XR collaborations in medicine could look like—blending innovation with practical application in a setting defined by shared expertise and experimentation.
